I couldn’t possibly be in Dublin for several days without saying hello and paying my respects to Phil. The first time I came to Ireland with Alice back in 2006, we played this gigantic outdoor festival just outside of Dublin. I was still figuring it all out. But I remember seeing @jadapinkettsmith rocking out at the side of the stage with this look of pride like, “Man, this brotha is out here DOIN’ it!” HUGE. The next day, we stayed in town for a day off. It’s my first time in Dublin and I made up my mind to venture out and at least see a little bit of it. I’d heard there was a statue of Phil Lynott somewhere so that was the first place I wanted to find. I walked out the door of the hotel lobby and literally the second I stepped onto the sidewalk, I hear someone say, “Oh my God, you’re William!” I look over to see this local kid, about 17 years old. He’d been at the gig the day before and now he just happened to be waiting for a bus at a stop just outside our hotel. He runs up talking excitedly about how great the gig was, etc. And he was such a cool kid, I said, “Hey, man. Can you take me to Phil?” And he’s like, “Yeah!” So he blows off whatever he was doing and we take off down the street. I said, “First, we need to stop somewhere and get a disposable camera” (this was just before smart phones). So we make a quick stop, grab a camera, and keep on blazing toward Grafton Street. Along the way, I start noticing more and more people falling in line following behind us. These were other young rocker kids who’d been at the gig. So we all Pied Piper’d it down the road until we finally came upon the Phil statue. We snapped a bunch of pictures on the disposable. I signed some things for the kids. And then the greatest thing: These crowds of people suddenly started leaving the surrounding pubs at the same time. And these two little old Irish ladies were walking by all the kids and me standing in front of the Phil statue. One of them looks at the statue and looks at me and asks, “Is that you?” And, without missing a beat, I’m like, “No, ma’am, it’s me dad.” And, in a way, it’s true. Without Phil and Hendrix, there is no me. Those guys made everything I’m doing possible.
