ALICE IN CHAINS SHOWS JERRY CANTRELL SHOWS

Entrevista Exclusiva a Nick Pollock (Agosto 2010)

4 .- Bueno, hace 17 años atrás, My Sister's Machine lanzaba su (último) álbum "Wallflowers".

THE INTERVIEW:

1.- The last Saturday August 21 was held the benefit concert and tribute to Layne Staley, with My Sister's Machine as headliner. What you tell us about that moment?
Awesome! It was a great night and the four of us loved it! It was great to play together again and we played better then we ever did.

2.- Why your band chose this event for the return?
Layne was our friend and it was a great stage (The Showbox) to play. Basically, it was the perfect storm, you could say... Jamie Richards asked us at the right time and it fulfilled all our needs very nicely.

3.- One memorable moment of this event?
Speaking to the audience about Layne and how we met and became friends during the set.

4.- Well, 17 years ago, My Sister’s Machine release the (last) album, "Wallflower." What is the future of My Sister's Machine?
Hmm... we are talking about playing some more shows.. maybe seeing if there are some national or higher-profile shows for us to play on. Owen and I are talking about writing some music together again.. not necessarily for MSM... but who knows!!

5.- My Sister's Machine make a tour with White Zombie and Pantera, at the time of the album "Diva." What do you remember about those years?
Lots of great shows! J We had a great time with each band and have some great memories like playing Kiss covers with the Pantera guys in the Midwest on some cover band’s gear or playing 3-up football with Rob Zombie in Kansas in a corn field. Man, that guy could throw a football!!

6.- Would you like to go to South America with your band? Do you have any reference about the South American audience?
I hear you guys and girls down there really dig Seattle music from the early nineties! We’ve not had the opportunity to go down to South America but it sure sounds fun!

7.- About your beginnings with Alice N’ Chains, how do you define this phase of your musical career?
Layne and I were best friends and did everything together. He and I came of age as musicians and performers with the original Alice... The music wasn’t our best but we learned our chops together and became very close friends. This really paved the way for us both!

8.- Do you have a big moment with Layne Staley, at the time of Alice N’ Chains?
Many! It’s the little things that count in a friendship. Being in a band is like a gang, a family and a relationship all at once. He was my mate and we did everything together. We worked at the same place and picked up on girls together... parties... shows... practice... recording... It’s hard to pick one!

9.- The name "Alice N’ Chains", is the history of Alice and how she broke her chains. (in the song "Hush, Hush") ... but, Who was Alice? She is a real girl?
The name came from Layne and a guy nicknamed Jet Silver. They were drunk and trying to come up with a cool glam-ish/rock-ish name and it stuck whne Layne told us. That’s about it for the name and it’s meaning. It was edgy for the time and very unique so we took it! The song, Hush-Hush didn’t have anything to do with the name, tho.. ;)

10.- On more than one occasion, Alice in Chains played with My Sister's Machine, at the same show. What do you remember those concerts?
Very well! One time, at the Paramount in Seattle, I spit off the front of the stage.. couldn’t see anything as the lights were too bright. I guess I spit on this really big event staff guy and he wanted to kill me.. I apologized to him and went back on stage for AIC’s set and dove over him at one point into the crowd! I think I was trying to taunt him or something J He could’ve killed me but couldn’t as I was in one of the bands so it was fun to get a free pass with him. He REALLY didn’t like us!

11.- What do you think about the return of Alice in Chains, with a new singer and a new album?
First of all, Sean and Jerry are my friends and I totally support them as such. I do feel Alice In Chains is with Layne fronting the band, and there is no replacing him in Alice. I don’t disagree with them for taking on a new singer and calling it AIC, I just don’t see it as the same band. It’s their band and their prerogative, tho. I think William is a great singer and does the AIC songs incredibly!

12.- Do you have any contact with them today?
As I said, Sean and Jerry are friends. Owen is much closer with them both, especially Sean. My life has revolved around my family, career as a UX designer and my bands so I don’t encounter them often. I last saw them at the listening party for Black Gives Way To Blue. It was a great time!

13.- About the job of the Layne Staley Fund, How would you qualify the rehabilitation work they do, with people addicted to drugs?
I can’t speak well to the work they do. I do know they help people who are at risk and need the help. I also know, from the organizers I’m close to, that the fund is very effective at getting the money they make through events like this My Sister’s Machine reunion show to the right people.

14.- If Layne could see what his name generates today, What do you think he will say?
That’s hard to say... so hard to say what kind of person he would be had he made different choices and not used to the ends he did. The Layne I knew and loved was, privately, a very caring and warm person. Publicly, he was the consummate rock star; cocky and irreverent but inside he was like all of us. He cared about the people close to him very much but didn’t show it outwardly. He was a smart guy who could see how things added up and, I hope, would want others to see that there is much to give and get from life. I’m assuming here that he, had he lived longer, would have given up the apathy and nihilism of his youth as I and so many of his other friends did as we grew and developed our lives. I know he was capable of it J This question makes me very sad he’s not here. I wish I had him here now, at this point in life. I’m very joyful, tho, to have had the time I did with him.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL, NICK!
We appreciate your amiability to help us. Eternally grateful.

Nick and Layne
