¡Santiago, quiero sangre!: Jerry Cantrell confirma concierto en Chile en noviembre, Festival Fauna Primavera 2024
Jerry Cantrell se suma así al festival Fauna Primavera 2024, que se llevará a cabo el 8 y 9 de noviembre de 2024, en el Parque Ciudad Empresarial, que queda en la comuna de Huechuraba, ciudad de Santiago. Es el retorno de Jerry a nuestro país, por cuarta vez, pero esta vez será en solitario, por primera vez. La expectativa es altísima, no sólo por este factor de debut como solista, sino que además, que viene con otro nuevo álbum bajo el brazo: después de la publicación del álbum "Brighten" el 2021, hoy estamos en víspera del lanzamiento de su nuevo álbum "I Want Blood", que según el mismo ha contado, es el mejor de su carrera. Jerry Cantrell anunció junto con el lanzamiento oficial de su nuevo single "Vilified", la próxima publicación de su cuarto álbum en solitario, "I Want Blood", para el 18 de octubre de 2024, via sello Double J Music. Estará acompañado con una alineación estelar de músicos con los que hizo ese disco, incluyendo al bajista Duff McKagan, el vocalista Greg Puciato y el baterista Gil Sharone, con quienes ya había trabajado antes en el álbum "Brighten" (2021), pero también se suman ahora Rob Trujillo de Metallica y a Mike Bordin de Faith No More, con quienes trabajó en el álbum "Degradation Trip" (2002)

Entrevista exclusiva a Karmann Sloane (Sketchy Goat), ilustradora de Alice in Chains y Jerry Cantrell, entre otros artistas
De pronto, nos dimos cuenta al observar hace unos años atrás, que algo había cambiado en algunos aspectos en el trabajo visual de Jerry Cantrell, con su álbum en solitario "Brighten" (publicado oficialmente el 29 de octubre de 2021), que iba acorde con la temática del disco. Había colores muy vivos, fluorescentes, algo que no era tan usual. Vimos unos pósters, y un montón de artículos que iban en esa dirección. El nombre del disco lo dice... "Brighten", que significa "hacer más brillante", "aclarar", "iluminar". Jerry estaba en otra etapa de su vida, se introdujo un poco más en el country y sin duda es un disco más luminoso. Y por cosas de internet, él vio un fanart de una artista visual, la ilustradora Karmann Sloane, también conocida como Sketchy Goat. Justamente calzaba todo, porque el concepto del disco iba en la misma dirección del arte que ella hace. Y luego de esto, su trabajo llegó a Alice in Chains, y así fue como se hizo más conocida, y nosotros nos enteramos del fantástico trabajo que ella hace.

Hey, hello! How are you? We would like to say to you... welcome to the community of Alice in Chains fans in Chile and also to spanish-speaking fans who will read this!!!
We would love to know more about you and whatever you’d like to share.
1. How did you start out in the world of graphic design?
'I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. In 2020, I shifted my main focus to digital work, and primarily psychedelia. Every day, I just started drawing musicians that were inspiring me at the time, and was lucky enough to get some of their attention. My first official client was The Smashing Pumpkins, which started my career.'
2. What techniques or digital tools do you prefer to use for creating your designs?
'I use procreate to draw everything, and occasionally use Blender and Procreate Dreams for animating'
3. How would you describe your style? We can see a touch of psychedelia, with very vivid, bright colors that are quite striking.
'That’s a fantastic description! Psychedelics and blacklights are my favorite. Bright colors, fluid lines, warped lettering- good ol’ fashioned rock n roll.'
4. What role do you believe visual arts plays in promoting a band’s music?
To me, it’s a different form of expression, a different way to see emotion and an interpretation of songwriting that should highlight the music. To me, visual art can complement or challenge it altogether.
5. Which is your creative process when your are designing for a specific band?
Regardless of who I’m working with, I start by becoming immersed in the project. The music, the artist- inspiration is everywhere and I try to pull from imagery that might not otherwise be related to what they’ve put out before. Whether it’s a pop of color, or a different way of interpreting a concept-I try to be as imaginative with a brief as I can (whilst still sticking to the job).
6. We know your first work with a band was with The Smashing Pumpkins in relation with an anniversary of the album “Gish”. How was that experience?
It was a dream come true! They were my first professional clients (and one of my favorite bands of all time), so working with that concept was wonderful. From the initial ideas about black light psychedelics to getting to know the team that put the Gish anniversary together, it was an amazing experience. They’re an awesome band to work with, and I feel very lucky to have worked with them many times since.
7. We also know your connection with Alice in Chains actually began with Jerry Cantrell when he release the album “Brighten.” How did that happen? And we also would like to know (a question from fans to another fan), what was your reaction when you knew that you were going to make designs for Jerry Cantrell?, what cross your mind in that moment?
As I mentioned before, I try to draw daily and my focus tends to be on what I’m listening to. What started as fan art for the newly released “Brighten” turned into the Trippy Jerry shirt- another incredible experience. As a fan, I couldn’t believe it, and especially couldn’t believe the power of the internet! I feel very lucky to have worked with my heroes, and Cantrell is probably around the top of that list. Every opportunity I’ve had to work with JC is mind blowing- and he really is wonderful to work with. I love interpreting his style, and I feel that it’s some of the strongest work I’ve put out.
8. We want to tell you that the series of designs that you made for Sean Kinney’s drumheads when Alice in Chains returned touring (post Covid-19) were incredible and very touching because they paid tribute to some deceased musicians, such as Neil Peart (drummer of Rush), Taylor Hawkins (drummer of Foo Fighters), Charlie Watts (drummer of The Rolling Stones), etc. You also included “LSMS” (for Layne Staley and Mike Starr) and you also paid tribute to a close band collaborator, Scott Dachroeden, without a doubt all of these designs are very touching for you, but also for the band. How did they receive all these emotional designs?
Thank you so much! Sean is my absolute favorite person to work with, since he’s got such a great artistic sense, especially when it comes to color! His ideas for “trippy, blacklight pieces” were something I very much enjoyed illustrating. Knowing they each meant something totally different and could each be interpreted as such was a blast to bring to life. My goal was to make each one feel alive onstage, and I think that came across.
9. We know you worked with Scott Dachroeden, Mike’s bass technician, but he was also the band’s photographer, who unfortunately passed away due to cancer. How was that experience and what memories do you have of him?
'Unfortunately I was never lucky enough to really get to know Scotty. We met very briefly in passing, and I feel lucky to have been able to tell him what a fan I was (and still am) of his work. That said, I feel that since his passing, I’ve gotten to know so many people that love and talk about him the present. So many different stories with the same loving undertone put together this composite image of a beautiful human being that is still very much with everyone that knew or met him. From what I’ve been told, there wasn’t anyone like Scott Dachroeden, and everyone has a different reason as to why.
Every opportunity I’ve had to pay homage to him is my favorite, and I’m eternally grateful to his friends and family for the trust in their loved one.'
10. Have you had any special experiences or memories collaborating directly with musicians or bands in developing artwork for their albums or concerts?
'I think the most noteworthy thing about working with amazing people is that everyone I’ve been lucky enough to meet are all really nice. I’ve yet to meet someone that’s not warm, genuine, and very interested in art. That said, spending New Year’s Eve with Heart in Seattle was out of this world. Nancy Wilson is one of the grooviest human beings ever, and a wonderful friend to watch shred onstage. Among the incredible folks there, I also got to spend the evening with one of my all-time heroes, Jesse Higman, and his wonderful partner Roxxann. She, Jesse, and I rang in the new year side stage at Climate Pledge arena in Seattle, under confetti and bright lights; Rock n’ Roll felt alive and well. All I remember being able to say as 2024 started was “It’s all happening.” '

1. ¿Cómo empezaste en el mundo del diseño gráfico?
'He estado dibujando desde que tengo uso de razón. En 2020, cambié mi enfoque principal al trabajo digital y principalmente a la psicodelia. 2. ¿Qué técnicas o herramientas digitales prefieres utilizar para crear tus diseños?
'Utilizo Procreate para dibujar todo y ocasionalmente uso Blender y Procreate Dreams para animar.'
3. ¿Cómo describirías tu estilo? Podemos ver un toque de psicodelia, con colores muy vivos, brillantes y bastante llamativos.
'¡Esa es una descripción fantástica! Lo psicodélico y las luces fluorescentes son mis favoritas. Colores brillantes, líneas fluidas, letras deformadas como la vieja moda del buen rock n roll.
4. ¿Qué papel crees que desempeñan las artes visuales en la promoción de la música de una banda?
Para mí, es una forma diferente de expresión, una manera distinta de ver la emoción y una interpretación de la composición que debería resaltar la música. Para mí, el arte visual puede complementarse o ser desafiante en conjunto.
5. ¿Cuál es tu proceso creativo cuando diseñas para una banda específica?
Independiente de con quién esté trabajando, comienzo sumergiéndome en el proyecto. La música, el artista: la inspiración está en todas partes y trato de extraer imágenes que no están relacionadas con lo que he creado antes. Ya sea un toque de color o una manera diferente de interpretar un concepto, trato de ser lo más imaginativa posible con el encargo (mientras sigo cumpliendo con el trabajo).
6. Sabemos que tu primer trabajo con una banda fue con The Smashing Pumpkins, a propósito del aniversario del álbum "Gish". ¿Cómo fue esa experiencia?
¡Fue un sueño hecho realidad! Fueron mis primeros clientes profesionales (y una de mis bandas favoritas de todos los tiempos), así que trabajar con ese concepto fue maravilloso. Como mencioné antes, trato de dibujar a diario y mi atención tiende a estar en lo que escucho. Lo que comenzó como un fan art del recién lanzado “Brighten” se convirtió en la camiseta de Trippy de Jerry - otra experiencia increíble. Como fan, no podía creerlo y, sobre todo, ¡no podía creer el poder de Internet! Me siento muy afortunada de haber trabajado con mis héroes, y Cantrell probablemente esté en la parte superior de esa lista. Cada oportunidad que he tenido de trabajar con JC es alucinante, y realmente es maravilloso trabajar con él. Me encanta interpretar su estilo y siento que es uno de los trabajos más fuertes que he realizado.
8. Saber que cada uno significaba algo totalmente diferente y que cada uno podía interpretarse como tal fue una maravilla darles vida. Mi objetivo era hacer que cada uno se sintiera vivo en el escenario, y creo que lo logré.
9. Sabemos que trabajaste con Scott Dachroeden, el técnico de bajo de Mike, pero él también era el fotógrafo de la banda, quien lamentablemente falleció debido a un cáncer. ¿Cómo fue esa experiencia y qué recuerdos tienes de él?
'Desafortunadamente nunca tuve la suerte de conocer realmente a Scotty. Nos conocimos muy brevemente de pasada y me siento afortunada de haber podido decirle lo fan que era (y sigo siendo) de su trabajo. Dicho esto, siento que desde su fallecimiento he conocido a mucha gente que lo ama y habla de él en el presente. Tantas historias diferentes con el mismo trasfondo amoroso juntaron esta imagen compuesta de un hermoso ser humano que todavía está muy presente en todos los que lo conocieron. Por lo que me han dicho, no había nadie como Scott Dachroeden, y cada uno tiene una razón diferente del por qué.
Cada oportunidad que he tenido de rendirle un homenaje es mi favorita y estoy eternamente agradecida a sus amigos y familiares por la confianza.'
10. ¿Ha tenido alguna experiencia o recuerdo especial colaborando directamente con músicos o bandas en el desarrollo de obras de arte para sus álbumes o conciertos?
'Creo que lo más destacable de trabajar con gente increíble es que todas las personas que he tenido la suerte de conocer son realmente amables. Aún no he conocido a alguien que no sea cálido y genuino y que no esté muy interesado en el arte. Dicho esto, pasar la Nochevieja con Heart en Seattle fue algo fuera de este mundo. Nancy Wilson es uno de los seres humanos más geniales de todos los tiempos y una maravillosa amiga a la que veo destrozar el escenario. Entre la gente increíble que estuvo allí, también pude pasar la noche con uno de mis héroes de todos los tiempos, Jesse Higman, y su maravillosa compañera Roxxann. Ella, Jesse y yo celebramos en el escenario lateral de Año Nuevo en el estadio Climate Pledge en Seattle, bajo confeti y luces brillantes; El Rock n' Roll se sentía vivo y coleando. Todo lo que recuerdo haber podido decir cuando comenzó 2024 fue: "Todo está sucediendo".'
